What’s on View at the Delaware History Museum?

Delaware: One State, Many Stories

Delaware: One State, Many Stories, the permanent exhibition of the Delaware History Museum, features two sections Discover Delaware, which introduces a general overview of the state’s history from the 1600s to the present, and Journey to Freedom showing the history of African Americans from the first known African brought to Delaware by the Swedes in the 1600s called “Black Anthony,” to Delaware Poets Laureate, brothers Nnamdi Chukwuocha and Al Mills.

Journey to Freedom

From the first Swedish ship that brought the earliest known man of African descent to the shores of Delaware, Antoni Schwartz, to the 1968 protests in Wilmington and the creative expressions of the present, Journey to Freedom considers the many paths African Americans take toward liberation. Using interactive displays and multimedia technology, Journey to Freedom captures the intricate stories of community, struggle, courage, sorrow, celebration, injustice, and resilience of African Americans in Delaware.

Collecting Wilmington: Perspective, Place and Memory

Collecting Wilmington: Perspective, Place & Memory is the temporary exhibition currently on view at the Delaware History Museum. Located in the DeWees/Thornson Foundations Gallery on the second floor of the museum, Collecting Wilmington is a series of five exhibits highlighting objects from the Paul Preston Davis Collection. While looking through the lense of Wilmington history, Collecting Wilmington offers a glimpse into the larger history of our nation as a whole. Not only does this exhibition contain colorful examples of chromolithography and a diverse array of photography and photographic techniques, it also showcases the Collector and the love, care, and diligence that go into preserving history.
