History in Bloom

Designated as a National Historical Landmark, The Read House & Gardens represents a vital piece of American heritage. As stewards of this extraordinary property, the Delaware Historical Society has launched a comprehensive garden restoration project.

Will you please help us renew this treasured landmark?

Guided by community input, historic research, and preservation best practices, this effort will:

  • Enhance accessibility and safety allowing those with strollers and mobility issues to fully experience the garden

  • Improve environmental sustainability protecting the property through improved drainage and a new irrigation system

  • Broaden educational opportunities offering new programs such as workshops, specialty tours, and horticulture classes

  • Create new event spaces initiating new cultural and entertainment experiences

  • Expand view creating an uninterrupted sightline of the river from the back of the gardens

The gardens need us now. This is our moment to reimagine and renew them to their fullest potential. And thanks to a matching grant from the Longwood Foundation, your generous gift will be doubled.
