The American Tradition of the Grand European Tour
April 6 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
Join the Delaware Historical Society for NY Times Best-Selling Author and journalist Wilton Barnhardt’s talk about the American tradition of the European Grand Tour on Saturday, April 6 at Huxley & Hiro Booksellers.
Through his latest book Western Alliances, Barnhardt will explore the idea that you weren’t civilized or cultured as an American unless you undertook the several-month European tour.
A common subject of literary classics by authors like Henry James, Ernest Hemingway, and Edith Wharton, the Grand Tour was often tied to narratives of sexual awakening, though they have often been parodied (Twain) as well!
Wilton Barnhardt is a NY Times best-selling author whose novels include “Western Alliances,” “Lookaway, Lookaway,” “Gospel,” and “Emma Who Saved My Life.” A frequent traveler and Sports Illustrated journalist, Barnhardt has also taught as visiting faculty at UC Irvine, the U. of Alabama, and CalTech.
