Embark on a captivating journey with Melissa Benbow as she leads us through Old New Castle, unveiling the fascinating history of Black families and neighbors from the 19th to early 20th centuries.

From the post-Revolutionary period through World War II, generations of Black families worked and lived in Old New Castle. Join us for an immersive learning experience as we discuss this rich history and walk through Old New Castle’s historic Black neighborhoods.

Melissa Benbow is a PhD Candidate at the University of Delaware specializing in nineteenth century literature and history. While interning at the Read House during the summer of 2023, she did research on the African American population of Old New Castle from 1800-1940.

To enhance the enjoyment of all participants, we kindly request that walking tour registrants be at least 12 years old.

Please note registration is limited to 20 participants.
