Beyond Words: New Histories of the Declaration of Independence

January 18 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

Moderated by Dr. Laura Earls, Director of the George Read II House & Gardens, this conversation between historians of the American Revolution will highlight the diverse people and movements who have engaged with the founding document of the United States, from 1776 through today.

Dr. Emily Sneff will share stories of some of the people who helped to spread the news of the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1776, and the people who worried about what would happen next. Dr. Zara Anishanslin will discuss the global promise and limits of the Declaration’s assertion that “all men are created equal” by looking at some of the many important afterlives of this founding document, notably among American women and in the French and Haitian Revolutions.

This conversation invites participants to consider how questions of belonging in the new nation affected Delawareans past and present.
