Wilmington 

The Delaware History Museum, Jane and Littleton Mitchell Center for African American Heritage, Old Town Hall, Research Library, and Willingtown Square comprise the majority of the 500 block of North Market Street. (click here for specific driving instructions to our downtown campus/sites)

 

New Castle

Read House & Gardens is located in the heart of historic New Castle at 42 The Strand. (click here for specific driving instructions)

Parking

New Castle

Limited free parking is available on The Strand, E. 2nd, and Delaware streets.

Wilmington

The Renaissance Center Garage at 401 King Street is only one block from the WIlmington campus. Limited metered parking is available on North Market, 6th, and Shipley streets. Nearby Colonial Parking Lots No. 43 and 50 are available for free after 5:00 pm and on weekends. Please note: there are two (2) meters designated for handicapped parking on each side of Market Street between 5th and 6th Streets.

 

City of Wilmington Common Parking Rules

  • Parking meters accept nickels, dimes, and quarters.
  • ParkMobile app can save you money and notifies you when it’s a holiday and no parking fee is required.
  • Parking rates are posted on each meter. Fee is $.25 for each 15 minutes
  • Monday-Friday you may park at a meter for up to two hours. Note 2-hour limit.
  • After 2-hours, you must move your car to another block. Parking in a different space or on the other side of the street will cause you to incur a $40 parking ticket.
  • Familiarize yourself with posted street signs regarding parking restrictions/limitations. Signs governing parking may appear anywhere on the block. Look up and down the entire block on the side where you’re parked, particularly if you don’t see any sign at your parking space.
  • Saturday-Sunday there is no fee for parking on the street.
  • Saturday-Sunday you may park for more than 2-hours.
  • Saturday-Sunday you may park in the Colonial Lot no. 50 on the southwest corner of Shipley Street between 6th and 5th for free

You will receive a $40 parking ticket if

 

  • You park for more than 2-hours Monday-Friday.
  • You park for 2-hours Monday-Friday then move your car anywhere on the same block.
  • Your tire(s) is on the curb or sidewalk. All four wheels must be touching the street.
  • You park more than 12 inches from the curb.
  • You park within 20 feet of a crosswalk or intersection.
  • You park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
  • You park near a bus stop or loading zone. Loading zones are reserved for commercial vehicles only.
  • You park within three feet of a driveway.
  • You park in a handicap space (designated by a blue meter) without a valid, properly displayed handicap plate or placard.

Directions: The entrance to the garage is on 5th Street. At the intersection of 5th and Market Street, turn left on 5th Street. Garage entrance is on the right. Note that there is a sign stating that 5th Street is one-way west, but you may turn east at Market Street because 5th Street is two-way between King Street and Market Street.
